We need to re-study our Bibles

(John Angell  James, “The Church in Earnest”)

We need to re-study our Bibles, and learn
what real Christianity is–how holy, how heavenly,
how spiritual, how loving, how morally and socially
excellent a matter it is. What separation from the
world, what devoutness, what intense earnestness,
what conscientiousness, what enlarged benevolence,
what unselfishness, what zealous activity, what
unearthliness, what seeds of celestial virtue–our
profession of godliness implies.

Having examined this, and obtained an impressive
idea of it, let us survey our own state, and ask if
we do not need, and ought not to seek, more of the
prevalence of such a piety as this, which, in fact, is
primitive Christianity.

Is our spiritual condition what it ought to be, what
it might be, what it must be–to fulfill our high
commission as the salt of the earth and the light of
the world? A Christian, acting up in some tolerable
measure to his profession, walking in the holiness
of the Gospel–is the strongest and most emphatic
testimony for God to our dark revolted world, next
to that of Christ Himself.

Revival Hymn

I posted this before, but I thought it was fitting for today. In our Men’s study at my home Church we’re working through the book of Jonah and have been talking about revival. This always gets me where it counts.

I believe the only way American can have this kind of massive Revival is right here in  2 Chronicles 7:14 and My people who are called by My name humble themselves and pray and seek My face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, will forgive their sin and will heal their land. God said in  Ezekiel 11:19 “And I will give them one heart, and put a new spirit within them. And I will take the heart of stone out of their flesh and give them a heart of flesh,

And for us who need personal revival  2 Timothy 1:6 For this reason I remind you to kindle afresh the gift of God which is in you through the laying on of my hands. Romans 12:1-2 Therefore I urge you, brethren, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies a living and holy sacrifice, acceptable to God, which is your spiritual service of worship And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, so that you may prove what the will of God is, that which is good and acceptable and perfect.

The Lost Doctrine

Titus 3:5 He saved us, not on the basis of deeds which we have done in righteousness, but according to His mercy, by the washing of regeneration and renewing by the Holy Spirit,

REGENERATION - the spiritual change brought about in a person’s life by an act of God. In regeneration a person’s sinful nature is changed, and that person is enabled to respond to God in faith.(Nelson) Ephesians 2:1-10

Humbled Before God

tozer_crop3Worship also means to “express in some appropriate manner” what you feel.…And what will be expressed? “A humbling but delightful sense of admiring awe and astonished wonder.” It is delightful to worship God, but it is also a humbling thing; and the man who has not been humbled in the presence of God will never be a worshiper of God at all. He may be a church member who keeps the rules and obeys the discipline, and who tithes and goes to conference, but he’ll never be a worshiper unless he is deeply humbled. “A humbling but delightful sense of admiring awe.” There’s an awesomeness about God which is missing in our day altogether; there’s little sense of admiring awe in the Church of Christ these days. A.W. Tozer

“For My hand made all these things, Thus all these things came into being,” declares the LORD. “But to this one I will look, To him who is humble and contrite of spirit, and who trembles at My word. Isaiah 66:2

Meditation

thomas-watson1Grace breeds delight in God, and delight breeds meditation. Meditation is a duty wherein consists the essentials of religion, and which nourishes the very life-blood of it. That the Psalmist may show how much the godly man is habituated to this blessed work of meditation, he subjoins, “In his law does he meditate day and night;” not but that there may be sometimes intermission: God allows time for our calling, he grants some relaxation; but when it is said, the godly man meditates day and night, the meaning is, frequently-he is much conversant in the duty.

It is a command of God to pray without ceasing, 1 Thess. 5:17. The meaning is-not that we should be always praying-but that we should every day set some time apart for prayer. We read in the Old law it was called the continual sacrifice, Numbers 28:24, not that the people of Israel did nothing else but sacrifice-but because they had their stated hours, every morning and evening they offered, therefore it was called the continual sacrifice. Thus the godly man is said to meditate day and night, that is, he is often at this work, he is no stranger to meditation.

Doctrine. The proposition that results out of the text is this-that a godly Christian is a meditating Christian, Psalm 119:15. “I will meditate in your precepts.” 1 Tim. 4:15, “Meditate upon these things.” Meditation is the chewing upon the truths we have heard. The beasts in the old law which did not chew the cud, were unclean; the professor who does not by meditation chew the cud, is to be accounted unclean. Meditation is like the watering of the seed, it makes the fruits of grace to flourish. From A Christian on the Mount By Thomas Watson.

Doctrine is useless!

“If you know these things, you are blessed if
you do them.”
John 13:17

200604_120_art_ryle1 “Doctrine is useless—if it is not accompanied
by a holy life. It is worse than useless; it does
positive harm. Something of the ‘image of Christ’
must be seen and observed in our private life,
and habits, and character, and doings”.
J. C. Ryle
