The Fear of the Lord

The Bible is clear that God is in control of everything that happens.

His sovereignty is absolutes.

Yesterday I talked about how I wanted to breakdown Proverbs 15: 7, 8 and 9 and use them as my goal for this New Year, and they read…

7 The lips of the wise spread knowledge,
But the hearts of fools are not so.
8 The sacrifice of the wicked is an abomination to the Lord,
But the prayer of the upright is His delight.
9 The way of the wicked is an abomination to the Lord,
But He loves one who pursues righteousness.

I think before we get any deeper in our study, I wanted to form a little foundation. We have been told that Proverbs are quick hits and generalities, but are they just that?

I think Proverbs 1 gives us a starting point to continue our study.

The proverbs of Solomon the son of David, king of Israel:
To know wisdom and instruction,
To discern the sayings of understanding,
To receive righteousness, justice and equity;
To give prudence to the naive;
To the youth knowledge and discretion,
A wise man will hear and increase in learning,
And a man of understanding will acquire wise counsel,
To understand a proverb and a figure,
The words of the wise and their riddles. Proverbs 1:1-6.

As we look at the bold words in Proverbs 1, we can say the purpose of the Proverbs is to gain wisdom and instruction. We need wisdom! Why? Look at Proverbs 1:7

The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge;
Fools despise wisdom and instruction.

Do you believe what God says in His word as truth, do you believe He is sovereign over the entire world? But the world (fools) denies this, they are searching for wisdom and knowledge by other ways and things. they ask why things happen the way they do? They don’t realize its God who sits above the circle of the earth Isaiah 40:22 and uses it as His footstool Isaiah 66:1

The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge;

The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge;

Joni Eareckson Tada said in (Is God Really in Control)…

“Nothing is a surprise to God; nothing is a setback to His plans; nothing can thwart His purposes; and nothing is beyond His control. His sovereignty is absolute. Everything that happens is uniquely ordained by God. Sovereignty is a weighty thing to ascribe to the nature and character of God. Yet if He were not sovereign, He would not be God. The Bible is clear that God is in control of everything that happens.”

Vance Havner said “Men love everything but righteousness and fear everything but God.” But Christians start here with the fear of the Lord!

Spurgeon said in The Treasury of David “Saints are described as fearing the name of God; they are reverent worshippers; they stand in awe of the Lord’s authority; they are afraid of offending Him; they feel their own nothingness in the sight of the Infinite One.”

I think ending with Isaiah 66: 2 is a great starting point for our study in Proverbs 15:7, 8 and 9. in the next few posts.

“For My hand made all these things, Thus all these things came into being,” declares the Lord.

“But to this one I will look, To him who is humble and contrite of spirit, and who trembles at My word.

The fear of the Lord is
the beginning of knowledge.

and that’s a beautiful thing!
Soli Deo Gloria
