What I Learned In Church This week

It was Alistair Begg in a recent sermon I listen to who said “Take away the belt of truth and the Armor of God falls off.” At first it was a little comical as I pictured a man with trousers to big for him and they were constantly falling to his ankles in utter shame. He was referring to Ephesians 6:14 where in the NASB it says “Stand firm therefore, HAVING GIRDED YOUR LOINS WITH TRUTH,” The ESV says “Stand therefore, having fastened on the belt of truth”

After I left church I couldn’t help thinking about truth and the Christian and the stance we’re called to have, so it’s not surprising that its the first piece of the armor mentioned, “girding the loins with TRUTH” It was a symbol of readiness to fight, you see when ever I am discouraged, confused and feel a little downcast, when ever I am lethargic or lazy or stuck in mediocrity, I fight back by girding my loins with truth, or as the ESV says fastening on the belt of truth.”

That is Jesus Christ for He is Truth and God is faithful, Jesus said in John 14:6 I am the Way the Truth and the Life. Vincent says Truth is “The state of the heart answering to God’s truth; inward, practical acknowledgment of the truth as it is in Him: the agreement of our convictions with God’s revelation.” So I stand firm in the truth of God’s word, with the readiness to battle!

I couldn’t imagine not having the truth of God and His faithfulness, truth is not based on our feelings or opinions but on the Word of God, and as He is faithful to me, I will stand firm and be faithful to Him. We have as Christians so much stuff and things of the world that we let stop us from being faithful to Christ, wether it be in our reading of His word, where we are fed, or prayer where we come boldly to the throne of God or in our daily walk with Christ. Paul says in a sense to tuck every hinderance that might stop us under this belt of truth an be ready to battle in the war for TRUTH.

The only way to combat the schemes of the prince of this world Satan is to renew your mind with the word of God Romans 12:2. We need to stand firm in His truth and He will be faithful, so let us also lay aside every encumbrance and the sin which so easily entangles us, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, Hebrews 12:1. Where do we get our strength and courage to do that? By fixing our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of faith. Hebrews 12:2 Gird up your loins and get ready for battle and fight the good fight.

We are called to be ready for the battle, to fight the good fight or we can be discouraged and live in mediocrity allowing the schemes of satan to hold us down, kind of like the picture of that man in my head where his pants keep falling down in utter shame!

By fixing our eyes on Jesus,
the author and perfecter of faith.

and that’s a beautiful thing!
Soli Deo Gloria

Thanks for always seeing that the Word of God is the source of truth. At the same time, thanks for being transparent and showing that in striving to live beyond “mediocrity”, we all need grace and patience, not only from the Lord, but from each other as well.

  2. Thanks Kurt I appreciate and agree with you.

Grace is good and we stand in grace but grace and mediocrity together just looks funny and as Spurgeon righty said “grace is the mother and nurse of holiness and not the apologist for sin”

Jesus said if you love Me you’ll do what I say and that’s hard to do, but by His doing we can have that desire to please Him by word and action.

I like what Peter says 1 Peter 1:13-15 Therefore, prepare your minds for action, keep sober in spirit, fix your hope completely on the grace to be brought to you at the revelation of Jesus Christ. As obedient children, do not be conformed to the former lusts which were yours in your ignorance, But like the Holy One who called you, be holy yourselves also in all your behavior. because it is written, “YOU SHALL BE HOLY, FOR I AM HOLY.”

There’s also something for us to do…. Holiness is what we need and that starts with the word of God.

  3. Great post.

We must keep our eyes on Him, lest we sink in the abyss of the world and all our troubles.

  4. Thanks Steve

As you know it’s not perfectionism we’re looking for, but it is holiness and separation from the things of this world,
So we work out our salvation with fear and trembling, that’s working out what God has worked in us by his sovereign free gift of grace. John 15:16 Philippians 2:12-13
