What I Learned In Church Yesterday

My intention was to post about The Lost Son and repentance for the lost as we continue in that parable… And I will next week, as we will deal with repentance and the believer. I also wanted to mention that my pastor ended a very fruitful exegetical study in 1 John yesterday that went very well with our Sunday school class. One thing he did say in his sermon: “you can tell where a person’s heart is by looking at their checkbook and calendar”… and I agree.

This past Sunday was a little different… My whole mind-set from the time I got up and throughout the service was about God and our response to Him. Sunday is a day I always look forward too… The Lord’s Day. The weather was sunny and cool, just the way I like it. This is the day we as believers set aside for the Lord… Giving Him praise and worshiping Him for who He is… Our God and Savior. He is our great awesome God… We tend to be very flippant with the words Great and Awesome. It’s easy for us to connect them to other things and people. But only God is great and awesome.   For I proclaim the name of the LORD; Ascribe greatness to our God! The Rock! His work is perfect, For all His ways are just; A God of faithfulness and without injustice, Righteous and upright is He. Deuteronomy 32:3-4.  I love Psalm 104:1 Bless the LORD, O my soul! O LORD my God, You are very great; You are clothed with splendor and majesty.

These names can be given to Him alone. I think we want to bring God down to our level and describe Him as we see fit… But He’s not like us; He’s not like us at all. He’s in control of all things… He is sovereign. The LORD has established His throne in the heavens, And His sovereignty rules over all. Psalm 103:19 and Lord over all. “Now to the King eternal, immortal, invisible, the only God, be honor and glory forever and ever. Amen.” I Timothy 1:17 and our only response is reverence “I make a decree that in all the dominion of my kingdom men are to fear and tremble before the God of Daniel; For He is the living God and enduring forever, And His kingdom is one which will not be destroyed, And His dominion will be forever. Daniel 6:26 and obedience “I have sworn by Myself, The word has gone forth from My mouth in righteousness And will not turn back, That to Me every knee will bow, every tongue will swear allegiance. Isaiah 45:23

This all leads right back to where we started- the Lord’s Day… giving Him praise and glorifying His wonderful name… For He is holy. The LORD reigns, let the peoples tremble; He is enthroned above the cherubim, let the earth shake! The LORD is great in Zion, And He is exalted above all the peoples. Let them praise Your great and awesome name; Holy is He. The strength of the King loves justice; You have established equity; You have executed justice and righteousness in Jacob. Exalt the LORD our God And worship at His footstool; Holy is He. Psalm 99:1-5

The Lord’s Day… When we gather together as believers to Exalt the LORD our God And worship at His footstool; Holy is He.

That’s what I learned in church yesterday

You learned a very valuable lesson that sadly many never learn. IT’S NOT ABOUT YOU… IT’S ALL ABOUT HIM! Corporate worship is a vital part of the Christian’s life. Good post :-)

I have said something similar about our use of “awesome” in the English language. Only God is truly awesome. First heard that in the book “More Than a Savior” and it really affected how I think about a lot of words that God intended to describe Himself. Thanks for sharing your thoughts!

I had always wanted to bring God down to my level and compare Him to someone or something or even give His attributes a quantitative aspect…. But it’s really qualitative that we need to connect to Him…. Not how much, but how so. He’s not like us at all. He’s other
