The Work of Grace

“The wind blows wherever it pleases. You hear its sound, but you cannot tell where it comes from or where it is going. So it is with everyone born of the Spirit.” John 3:8

200604_120_art_ryleThe workings of grace in the heart are utterly mysterious and unsearchable.

We cannot explain why the Word produces effects on one person in a congregation, and not upon another.

We cannot explain why, in some cases; with every possible advantage, and in spite of every entreaty; people reject the Word, and continue dead in trespasses and sins.

We cannot explain why in other cases; with every possible difficulty, and with no encouragement;people are born again, and become decided Christians.

electing graceWe cannot define the manner in which the Spirit of God conveys life to a soul, and the exact process by which a believer receives a new nature.

All these are hidden things to us.

We see certain results, but we can go no further.

This is deeply instructive. It is humbling no doubt to ministers, and teachers of others. The highest abilities, the most powerful preaching, the most diligent working, cannot command success.

God alone can give spiritual life.

But it is a truth at the same time, which supplies an admirable antidote to excessive anxiety and despondency. Our principal work is to sow the seed. That done, we may wait with faith and patience for
the result. We may leave our work with the Lord. He alone can, if He thinks fit, give success. (The workings of grace in the heart by J. C. Ryle) HT: Grace Gems

God alone can give spiritual life.

It Was Grace and Only Grace

Who has believed our message? And to whom has the arm of the Lord been revealed? Isaiah 53:1

SpurgeonIn Gods case, if He had said in the infinite sovereignty of His absolute will, “I will have no substitute, but each man shall suffer for himself, he who sinneth shall die,” none could have murmured. It was grace, and only grace which led the divine mind to say, “I will accept of a substitute. There shall be a vicarious suffering; and My vengeance shall be content, and My mercy shall be gratified.”  (C.H. Spurgeon Expiation, Sermon 561)

What Grace Is and Isn’t

HisgraceWhen someone says “Where’s your grace”, what do they really mean? Are they suggesting that the Spirit of God is no longer in you? I mean what is grace and can you see it? To me grace is something that reflects someone else. I know the meaning of grace is unmerited favor and we’re saved by God’s free grace Ephesians 2:8, 9 and sanctified by God’s free grace. 1 Corinthians 6:11

I know there is God’s common grace which He bestows on all people as He causes His sun to rise on the evil and the good, and sends rain on the righteous and the unrighteous. Matthew 5:45.

To me grace has to be connected to the One who gave us life 2 Corinthians 5:17, who died so we can be saved by grace alone Ephesians 2:8, 9 and that is our Lord Jesus Christ 2 Corinthians 5:21. Grace is God’s sovereign plan before the foundation of the world to save sinners, the elect who deserves His wrath Ephesians 1:1-11.

Amazing GraceGrace is not something that we jump in and out of, Paul says we stand in grace Romans 5:2 and that grace reigns through righteousness Romans 5:21. To me grace is being clothed in Christ Galatians 3:27, To me grace is being made into the image of Christ 2 Corinthians 3:18 Romans 8:29.

Peter said grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ 2 Peter 3:18. Grace is putting on the Lord Jesus Christ, and making no provision for the flesh Romans 13:14. Grace comes from Christ!

Grace instructs us “For the grace of God has appeared, bringing salvation to all men, 12 instructing us to deny ungodliness and worldly desires and to live sensibly, righteously and godly in the present age, Titus 2:11-12

Yes we do enjoy liberty from the bondage of sin because of this grace Romans 8:12, so What shall we say then? Are we to continue in sin that grace might increase? May it never be! How shall we who died to sin still live in it? Romans 6:1-2 . Remember grace reigns through righteousness Romans 5:21. This grace is not a license to do and say whatever we want as believers, Paul says absolutely not!

What grace isn’t!

  • Grace is not the apologist for your sin! Spurgeon said it best. “Grace is the mother and nurse of holiness, and not the apologist of sin”
  • Grace is not fire insurance (from Hell) with no obedience to His word and to the One that saved you.
  • Grace does not enable or allow people to say and do anything they want contrary to the word of God for the sake of unity in the body of Christ.
  • Grace does not continually allow people to hover in mediocrity with their faith, with a steady diet of milk Hebrews 5:12, Peter says grow in grace and knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ 2 Peter 3:18.
  • Grace does not say to forgo truth for the sake of love. but speaking the truth in love, we are to grow up in all aspects into Him who is the head, even Christ, Ephesians 4:15

Grace

Grace is the work of God that altered this mans life!

I am saved and sanctified by grace, His amazing grace!
Where’s your grace?
You’ll find it in Christ!

and that’s a beautiful thing!

New Life in Christ

I love this video posted by Phil Johnson on YouTube, its clear that the message of Jesus Christ and His saving power never changes over the years.

A 1979 film produced in and around Grace Community Church by Family Films. Vintage John MacArthur with long, open collars and teardrop glasses. Plus: special appearances by Jubilant Sykes. Styles and hairdos have changed dramatically, but the message hasn’t. Then, as now, it was biblical, honest, gospel-centered, and clear.

Put Your Troubles Here!

“Cast your burden on the Lord—and He will sustain you.” Psalm 55:22

SpurgeonCast your troubles where you have cast your sins; you have cast your sins onto Jesus—cast your troubles there also! As soon as the trouble comes, quick, the first thing, tell it to your Father in heaven! Remember, that the longer you take telling your trouble to God—the more your peace will be impaired. The longer the frost lasts—the more likely the ponds will be frozen.

Oh! It is a happy way of smoothing sorrow, when we can cast our burden upon the Lord. Oh, you agitated Christians, do not dishonor your religion by always wearing a ‘frown of concern’. Come, cast your burden upon the Lord. I see you staggering beneath a weight, which He would not feel. What seems to you a crushing burden—would be nothing but a bit of dust to Him. See! The Almighty bends His shoulders, and He says, “Here—put your troubles here!” (Charles Spurgeon) HT: Grace Gems

Examine Yourselves

Test yourselves to see if you are in the faith; examine yourselves! Or do you not recognize this about yourselves, that Jesus Christ is in you—unless indeed you fail the test? 2 Corinthians 13:5

SpurgeonNow what is it to have Jesus Christ in you? The Roman Catholics hang the cross on his bosom, but the true Christian carries the cross in his heart and a cross inside the heart my friends is one of the sweetest cures for a cross on the back. If you have a cross in your heart, christ crucified in you, the hope of glory and all the cross of this worlds troubles will seem to you light enough and you will easily be able to sustain it. Christ in the heart means Christ believed in.

The Heart of the Bible

The Heart of the Bible. The greatest paragraph in the the Word of God.

The greatest paragraph in the Word of God.

James Mongomery Boice writes in his commentary on Romans 3, Volume 1, Chapter 40, page 3 “But now things are different. There is hope because of what the Lord Jesus Christ has accomplished. The incarnation, life, death, and resurrection of Jesus have changed everything.”

Martin Lloyd-Jones calls them “the great turning point”

The Word of God Rules

He will teach us of his ways, and we will walk in his paths. Micah 4:2.

preacher-at-pulpit-copy Here in a few words the prophet defines true worship of God. For it would not be enough for the nations to come together to one place to confess that they are worshipers of one God if they did not also show real obedience. True obedience depends on faith, as faith depends on the Word. It is, therefore, especially worthy of note that the prophet here sets God’s Word in the center to show us that religion is founded on obedience in faith, and that God can be worshiped only when he himself teaches his people and tells them what they ought to do. When God’s will is revealed to us, we can truly adore him. When the Word is taken away, some form of worship of God remains, but there is no real religion which could please God.

whitewithblack_edited-1.jpgHence we conclude that the church of God can be established only where the Word of God rules, where God shows by his voice the way of salvation. Therefore, until true doctrine sheds its light, men cannot be gathered in one place to constitute the true body of the church. Clearly, then, where the teaching is corrupt or is despised, there is no religion approved by God. Men can, indeed, take God’s name boastfully on their lips; but before God, there is no religion except what is measured by the rule of the Word. It follows then that there is no church which is not subject to God’s Word and is not ruled by it. The prophet here defines both true religion and the way in which God gathers his church. (John Calvin, Calvin Commentaries)

The Gospel is Very Simply Jesus Christ

LawsonHe reconciled sinful man to a Holy God, there is no other way for us to have a relationship with an infinitely Holy God except for the blood of the cross of the Lord Jesus Christ and it was by his sin bearing substitutionary vicarious death upon that cross, it was as if He took sinful man in one hand and holy God in the other hand and brought the two together through His death, by that death He satisfied the righteous anger of God and appeased His wrath towards all who would believe in Him and there is now therefore no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus and therefore being justified by faith we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ.

He made Him who knew no sin to be sin on our behalf, so that we might become the righteousness of God in Him. 2 Corinthians 5:21

Listen to the entire impromptu Gospel presentation by Steve Lawson below.

How glorious it would be to come into the yoke of the Lord Jesus Christ and to receive His salvation. This is a decisive moment in your life, you may never have another opportunity like this again where the gospel is so clearly being presented to you, and so I beg you, I urge you if you are not saved, if you are not committed to this moment commit your life to Jesus Christ.

“How glorious it would be to come into
the yoke of the Lord Jesus Christ
and to receive his salvation.”

Be Careful of Your Pleasures

MEBe careful of your pleasures It is said that where the most beautiful cacti grow, there the venomous serpents are to be found at the root of every plant. And it is so with sin. Your fairest pleasures will harbor your grossest sins. Take care; take care of your pleasures. Cleopatra’s asp was introduced in a basket of flowers; so are our sins often brought to us in the flowers of our pleasures. (Spurgeon)

Your life as a Christian is seemingly full of Christ and there is no room for self, but an aggressive sin comes in and wiggles his way in, crowding out Christ just a little bit. You give place to this sin and soon another does the same thing. Sin by sin, error by error, selfishness by selfishness, the backsliding continues until you are virtually empty of Christ and full of self. (Richard Owen Roberts)

GraceisThis is a paradox, of course, as Augustine, Luther, Edwards, Pascal and others have pointed out. When individuals rebel against God, they don’t achieve freedom. They fall into bondage, because rebellion is sin, and sin is a tyrant. On the other hand, when men and women submit to God, becoming his slaves, they become truly free. They achieve the ability fully to become the special, unique beings that God created them to be. (James Montgomery Boice Taken from Foundations of the Christian Faith-Book 1)

This is the message we have heard from Him and announce to you, that God is Light, and in Him there is no darkness at all. 6 If we say that we have fellowship with Him and yet walk in the darkness, we lie and do not practice the truth; 7 but if we walk in the Light as He Himself is in the Light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus His Son cleanses us from all sin. 8 If we say that we have no sin, we are deceiving ourselves and the truth is not in us. 9 If we confess our sins, He is faithful and righteous to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. 10 If we say that we have not sinned, we make Him a liar and His word is not in us. 1 John 1:5-10

If we confess our sins,
He is faithful and righteous
to forgive us our sins and to
cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

and that’s a beautiful thing!
