What The Church Needs

“The most critical need of the Church at this moment is men, bold men, free men. The church must seek, in prayer and much humility, the coming again of men made of the stuff of which prophets and martyrs are made.” A. W. Tozer

Yet, surely, there must be some who will fling aside the (cowardly) love of peace, and speak out for our Lord, and for His truth. A craven spirit is upon man, and their tongues are paralyzed. Oh, for an outburst of true faith and holy zeal. C.H. Spurgeon

Are visits to Heaven for real?

One of the best quotes I have heard about Heaven is for real was from a blogger who said  “Heaven is for real…Well Duh”.

I have read so many reviews and articles from godly men and women who have a big problem with this book and movie.

I couldn’t pass this up, what a great article in Answers Magazine from Answers in Genesis.

Are visits to Heaven for real?

Heaven_Is_for_Real_(Burpo_book)_coverA pastor’s book recounting his son’s visit to heaven rose to the top of the bestseller list and became a major motion picture. Christians were quick to spread the word, but could such visits be for real?

Colton’s descriptions of heaven are full of fanciful features and peculiar details that bear all the earmarks of a child’s vivid imagination. There’s nothing transcendent or even particularly enlightening about Colton’s heaven. It is completely devoid of the breathtaking glory featured in every biblical description of the heavenly realm.

Stories like Colton’s are as dangerous as they are seductive. Readers not only get a twisted, unbiblical picture of heaven; they also imbibe a subjective, superstitious, shallow brand of spirituality. Studying mystical accounts of supposed journeys into the afterlife yields nothing but confusion, contradiction, false hope, bad doctrine, and a host of similar evils.

Listen folks Proverbs 30:4 says

Who has ascended into heaven and descended?
Who has gathered the wind in His fists?
Who has wrapped the waters in His garment?
Who has established all the ends of the earth?
What is His name or His son’s name?
Surely you know!

John 3:13 answers “No one has ascended into heaven, but He who descended from heaven: the Son of Man.

Story Book Trips to Heaven

It’s finally here, the movie about the book ( 6 million copies sold) “Heaven is for Real”. I wonder how many Born-Again Bible Believer Christians will waste their money to see this story book trip to heaven?

Then there’s the Bible version, as the real truth about heaven is revealed in the pages of Scripture. Phil Johnson from GTY writes…

Bible-WhiteBackground.jpeg

Every week, I answer e-mails and inquiries from evangelicals who are confused by the barrage of afterlife travelogues. Why Christians who profess to believe the Bible would find these stories the least bit compelling is an utter mystery, but it is a sure sign that many in the evangelical movement have abandoned their evangelical convictions. Specifically, they have relinquished the principle of sola Scriptura and lost their confidence in the sufficiency of Scripture. Why else would they turn from clear biblical teaching on heaven and seek an alternative view in mystical experiences that bear no resemblance to what Scripture tells us?”  You can read the entire article HERE

Heaven_Is_for_Real_(Burpo_book)_coverTim Challies writes “Colton Burpo doesn’t know how long he was there, but his travel diary has surpassed 6 million copies sold, with a kids’ edition accounting for another half million. Challies goes on to say “90 Minutes in Heaven and Heaven Is For Real and all the rest are not books that beautify the doctrine of heaven, but books that attack the doctrine of Scripture. The Bible insists that it is enough, that it is sufficient, that we have no need for further special revelation from God; these books insist that it is not.” Read his entire article Here

This From David Platt

The best moment of a Christian’s life is his last one, because it is the one that is nearest heaven. And then it is that he begins to strike the keynote of the song which he shall sing to all eternity. C.H. Spurgeon

Learn the Truth About Heaven

John notes in the audio clip below, the real truth about heaven is revealed in the pages of Scripture.

TheGloryofHeaven-NEOne thing is clear: it does not signal any significant upsurge of interest in the biblical perspective on eternity. On the contrary, the data actually seem to indicate that lots of people are simply making up whatever concept of heaven pleases them. We would of course expect New Age practitioners, cranks, and cultists to abandon the Bible in favor of their own dreams and fantasies. But this tendency to invent one’s own personal concept of heaven seems to be an even bigger problem in the evangelical community than it is in the world at large. The heart of our study together in this book will be an in-depth look at what the Bible says about heaven. No matter what one thinks about or wishes to imagine about heaven, the reality is different and better by magnitudes. If the inerrant biblical truth God has given us is the only reliable knowledge about heaven we have access to (and it is), then that is what should grip our hearts and minds. . . . Now let’s see why the Bible’s account of heaven is so much better than the dreams and speculations of the human mind. GTY

Cut the Word of Truth Straight!

Be diligent to present yourself approved to God as a workman who does not need to be ashamed, accurately handling the word of truth. 2 Timothy 2:15 NASB

tozer-quoteI think this has to be one of the most important verses in the bible on the word of God for the edification of the body of Christ, Straightforward EXEGESIS must be the aim of all teachers of the word of God.

I can remember times before I bring a lesson to my Sunday school class and saying to myself, did I dig enough into the text and what I’m bringing is it right, is it accurate and did I do proper exegesis? It’s so important to get it right!

Especially in light of James 3:1 Let not many of you become teachers, my brethren, knowing that as such we will incur a stricter judgment.

There is so many things James could have started out on about our tongue and he chooses teaching… When he writes “Let not many of you become teachers”

James is not trying to discouraged teaching and teachers here, we know that gifted teachers are one of the hardest positions to fill in the Church, but James writes let not many of you become one! Why and why here in this section about the tongue? He could have started out about lying, swearing and gossip or anything our deceiving tongue does, but no, he starts out with “Teaching” And this is why…

The most serious thing that can flow from our tongue is the distorting and misrepresenting of God’s word, the Word of God is not a bendable kid’s toy to twist and bend, reading into the text or taking the TEXT OUT OF CONTEXT helps no one and will lead to our shame before God if we do so.

texts

Exegesis is the act of critically interpreting a text in an attempt to draw the meaning out of the text, unlike eisegesis, where one reads his own meaning into the text. Paul is telling Timothy to interpret a text in an attempt to draw the exact meaning out of the text ( accurately handling the word of truth), not to insert his own meaning into the text or quarrel about words or godless chatter 2 Timothy 2:14, 16.

Paul says to be diligent to present yourself approved to God as a workman, as a friend of mine recently said to me “a leader and teacher must do his due diligence before bringing us the word of God.” Wuest  says “Do your best, make haste, give diligence, hurry on, be eager to show yourself approved unto God.”

cutting straight

Vincent defines the word orthotomeō (ὀρθοτομεω) (Rightly Dividing or Accurately Handling), “to cut straight,” as paths, “to hold a straight course, to make straight, to handle rightly.” He says: “The thought is that the minister of the gospel is to present the truth rightly, not abridging it, not handling it as a charlatan, not making it a matter of wordy strife (v. 14), but treating it honestly and fully, in a straightforward manner.” (Wuest)

Paul told Timothy to skillfully, diligently and accurately teach the word of God so he wouldn’t be like those who are worldly chatterers. 2 Timothy 2:14, 16

So the teacher of God’s word must teach the word consistent with God’s intended meaning and purpose, and as my dear Mother said over and over to me…

“You won’t be popular, but you won’t be ashamed before God and that’s a beautiful thing!”

The teacher who is accurately handling the word of truth
has a deep concern for the welfare of those he’s teaching!

Truth and God must be Earnestly Sought

As the new year approaches, my prayer is many will have a new desire for God’s word. Not only reading it, but earnestly seeking it. The next few posts, as we come to the end of 2013 will be some encouragements and helpful words to carry out this.

As A.B. Simpson rightly said:

ab_simpson

“God has hidden every precious thing in such a way that it is a reward to the diligent, a prize to the earnest, but a disappointment to the slothful soul. All nature is arrayed against the lounger and the idler. The nut is hidden in its thorny case; the pearl is buried beneath the ocean waves; the gold is imprisoned in the rocky bosom of the mountains; the gem is found only after you crush the rock which encloses it; the very soil gives its harvest as a reward to the laboring farmer. So truth and God must be earnestly sought.”

Authentic love “rejoices with the truth”

philjohnson_sm_ezrAs Christians, we need to understand love from a biblical perspective. Authentic love “rejoices with the truth” (1 Corinthians 13:6). Love and truth are perfectly symbiotic, and each virtue is essential to the other. Love without truth has no character. Truth without love has no power. Phil Johnson

Boldness and Truth

jonathan_edwardsThere is a false boldness for Christ that only comes from pride. A man may rashly expose himself to the world’s dislike and even deliberately provoke its displeasure, and yet do so out of pride… True boldness for Christ transcends all; it is indifferent to the displeasure of either friends or foes. Boldness enables Christians to forsake all rather than Christ, and to prefer to offend all rather than to offend Him. (Jonathan Edwards Religious Affections.)

Who Buys Truth, And Does Not Sell It?

Buy truth, and do not sell it, Get wisdom and instruction and understanding. Proverbs 23:23

intrepidtruthI read those words this morning during my time in the word and I couldn’t help but to think of my Mom who always told me to, with great eagerness examine the Scriptures Acts 17:11, to diligently present myself before God as a workman, work hard at it, as not to be ashamed before God. 2 Timothy 2:15.

To grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ. 2 Peter 3:18.  It should to be desired more than honey and pure gold Psalm 19:9, 10. To be a God pleaser and not a man pleaser… but just as we have been approved by God to be entrusted with the gospel, so we speak, not as pleasing men, but God who examines our hearts.  1 Thessalonians 2:4

Do we buy it with money? No, I can tell you it’s free… I believe here it means to get it at any cost.

What are the cost? That depends on you and how far you are willing to go to obtain truth, wisdom. instruction and understanding. Are you willing to sell everything to get it Matthew 13:44-46, to lose friendships and offices to keep it, to have contempt poured on you Luke 4:28, 29?

Are you willing to be picked on and pointed out as a closed-minded, dogmatic, antithetical non-conformist?

Are you willing to be that one intrepid who stand up for truth in the face of opposition?

If you are, then

Buy truth, and do not sell it

and that’s a beautiful thing!
